2011 Seminarians Conference

Disciples seminarians from across the country will converge on Nashville, Tenn., March 31-April 3 for the biennial Seminarians Conference, sponsored by Disciples general ministries and organized by Higher Education and Leadership Ministries (HELM).

The 2011 Disciples Seminarians Conference, "A Toolbox for Ministry," will feature opportunities to learn about the tools and resources for ministry made available by the General Ministries of the church. The conference is a time of fellowship, networking, worship, and learning about the wider ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). It offers seminarians a chance to meet other new Disciples leaders and learn how the church can help them and the congregation or organization they lead to minister faithfully and effectively.

Who can attend?
The conference is open to all M.Div. students who have completed at least one year of study and have not attended previously.

When is it?
The conference begins with dinner Thursday, March 31, and concludes after lunch Sunday, April 3.

Where is it?
The Scarritt-Bennett Center in Nashville, Tennessee, is a few blocks from Vanderbilt University and directly across the street from the Disciples of Christ Historical Society. Each seminarian will have a single bedroom and a shared bath. You may choose your suite mate.

How much is registration?
Your $95 registration fee, covering only a fraction of the cost, includes three nights of lodging and all meals during the conference. All students pay the same amount regardless of local accommodations.

Travel subsidies
February 14: The travel subsidies budget has been exhausted, but you still sign up for a waiting list. Here are the details:

The conference has limited funding for travel subsidy for students at non-Disciples schools on a first-come, first-served basis. The subsidy, if needed, will depend on the distance from Nashville to your campus. Reimbursement depends on the distance between your campus and Nashville:

  • 0-50 miles: No reimbursement available.
  • 51-300 miles: You are encouraged to carpool. Drivers will be reimbursed 25 cents/mile. For each passenger you add, up to 4 passengers, you will receive an extra 5 cents per mile.
  • 301-500 miles: The conference will reimburse up to $200 for a plane ticket or mileage as described above.
  • 500+ miles: The conference will reimburse up to $250 for a plane ticket or mileage as described above.
You must contact Brad Lyons at HELM by phone at 314-991-3000 or blyons@helmdisciples.org to arrange for your travel subsidy. Have your seminary's street address ready when you call.

Remember, funds are limited, so don't wait. Payment will be made following the conference when you provide a receipt for travel or the total miles traveled. If paying for the plane ticket yourself creates a hardship, please advise HELM when you obtain your travel subsidy.

If you are a student at a Disciples-related theological institution, your school is coordinating travel. Look for information from your school soon.
