A Litany for Higher Education Sunday

Leader: Living God, you have commanded your people to love you with heart and soul and mind and strength. We praise you as the mystery behind and beyond our lives, as the power that compels us to examine our lives and our world, to experience and to understand. We give you thanks for the drive toward learning that is at the heart of life itself.

Response: We praise you, O God, for heart and mind and soul and strength!

Leader: Mighty One, you have bound our lives into a single whole and breathed into us your spirit. May we resist the temptation to divide what you have made whole, to separate knowledge from faith, worship from service, study from prayer.

Response: Help us, O God, to serve you with all our being.

Leader: Pour out your Spirit on teachers and learners everywhere. Let them know the holiness of their task and let us celebrate what their lives give to the world and to your Church. Give strength and grace to the leaders of theological schools and colleges and universities so that their leadership may give appropriate place to faith and reason.

Response: Help them, O God, to be faithful to their task.

Leader: O guardian and guide of all who live, be with our children, our spouses, our families and friends and with all who give their time to study in graduate schools and seminaries, in community colleges and vocational schools, in colleges and universities. Help them and us to know the holiness of their task and celebrate what they will give to your world. Guide and support those men and women who give specialized ministry to students, teachers and campuses.

Response: Help them, O God, to find light for their lives in the light of your love.

Unison: Give to your Church, O God, and to her institutions of higher education, and to all who minister in and through them, grace and vision in equal portions, that they may support and guide each other in their common mission: the transformation of this world into the new creation you have promised. In the name of Jesus Christ, whose reign is without end. Amen.
