I can see clearly now

Felicia WrightThis is my first year at Texas Christian University. Sadly, but yet hopeful, I am a freshman ("fresh meat"). Leaving high school and "ruling the school" was the best level of my high school career. Being a freshman has brought to my attention a new outlook on academic, social, and spiritual life. Although, I left high school not too long ago (three months to be exact), I feel the change and see a new outlook on significant aspects of life from a college students prospective.

I am aware that academically, "professors" expect nothing but the best and that the student works hard to achieve all of the objectives stated in the curriculum. In high school it was easy for me to approach the teacher about an assignment. However, approaching a "professor," is not simple as pie. In college students are expected to visit a professor with questions at hand, along with some knowledge about the assignment. College curriculum requires that students think on a broad level (higher thinking). With higher level thinking comes along an abundant amount of studying. Study habits are essential for a college student in order to be a success.

Being a freshman also brings about new social opportunities. Here at Texas Christian University there are over 100 organizations on campus. It was easy to balance being on the Dance Team and keeping abreast of my academics in high school. Beyond being in different organizations, non academic social gatherings (parties) are a popular venue amongst college students. These social activities have become overwhelming to me. Never the less, it is important to stay focus on my goal — earn a degree.

There are so many occurrences in the world today that college students can get into. Spiritually, it is important for me to stay committed to God. Most students, who leave home to attend college, also leave their church home for a short period of time. With everything that's going on in college, as well as the world, staying and remaining committed to God becomes last on the list of "Things to Do." I have realized that it is important that I read The Bible and attend church regularly during my stay here at Texas Christian University.Academic, social, and spiritual aspects of life as a college student, is all in all a learning experience that will prepare me for the future. I feel that I have grown up from the high school level of life, even though I'm fresh out of high school. The new outlook that I acquire allows me to make ethical and life changing decisions today that will affect my tomorrow.

Felicia Wright is in her first year as a HELM Leadership Fellow and is a member of University Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Houston, Texas.
