When opportunities present themselves

Ralph WesleyWhen I first arrived at Delaware State University, I really didn't know what to expect from college. I knew that everyday would be a learning experience, and it would be my responsibility to take advantage of that concept in a manner that would benefit not only myself but others. With God's everlasting guidance, I have been blessed to accomplish many of the goals that I had set when I first arrived here.

The first church to open their arms to me was Whatcoat United Methodist Church right here in Dover, Delaware. (The nearest Disciples congregation is more than an hour's drive.) Now I know what your are thinking, "United Methodist." Truth is I felt that God had introduced us and this was one of those situations I felt I had to take advantage of. The people of the church are extremely hospitable and sweet to me. They cherish college students who volunteer their time, especially when it involves children and young adults. The teenagers, boys and girls, enjoy having me around because I listen to them. I am interested in what they have to say, mainly because I remember what it was like at that age. (Hey, it wasn't that long ago.) Listening is key in communication with others, especially to those who value your opinions.

In the past two years, God has blessed me with the opportunity to be the "voice" of the Delaware State University Hornets. I can remember sitting in one of my classes as a sophomore, and the class discussion was career goals. One of my goals was to be an announcer at sporting events. There was an older guy in the class who attended the same church as my current boss, Dennis. He encouraged me after class to talk to Dennis because he thought I had a great voice. I went to talk to Dennis a few days later, and it has been my job ever since. I really love the job I do. It is a blessing to do something I love, and get paid for it, even though I would do it for free, but hey I've got expenses. Following one of our games about a month ago, an old guy, (and I stress OLD), approached me and said, I quote, "I have been to many college games in my lifetime, and you are the best announcer that I have ever heard." That meant a lot to me when he went out of his way to complement me. I felt Jesus speaking through him as I talked to him and as he eerily walked off into the sunset, so to speak. I think it was his way of saying, "Good job, Ralph, and keep up the good work."

I also have been privileged to have my own sketch comedy television show on campus. I always hear nothing but good reviews from fellow students. I work extremely hard for something I enjoy doing. I don't do it for class or for credit, I do it because I have a certain passion for film and making people laugh. I surround myself with positive people who are willing to sacrifice their time and work together to achieve a common goal. The support is great and the demand is high for the show.

My time here in Delaware is running short and it has been extremely rewarding. I have made the best out of a potentially dull situation (Dover, that is). But none of this would be possible with out the help of the Lord and my family and friends. Whenever I pray, the first thing I do is thank the Lord for everything that he has continually blessed me with, day in and day out. With his guidance, I will continue to take advantage of the opportunities the Lord presents me with. I am truly blessed and thankful for everything God is doing in my Life.
