Silver and gold

Rebekah Cypert I am currently spending this summer as an intern for Saint Andrew Christian Church in Olathe, Kansas. Right now I am located midway between Bethany College in West Virgina, where I am a student, and my home of Allen, Texas. Thus, distancing me from both.

This past Sunday as I helped out in children's church at Saint Andrew, I was reminded of my relationships both in West Virginia as well as in Texas. At the beginning of children's church the children sat in a circle and sang a few songs together. This Sunday a little girl stood up and wanted to lead and share in a song. She had recently attended a Brownies camp and this was a song she had sung there. The song went:

"Make new friends, but keep the old.
One is silver and the other gold!
A circle is round, it has no end
and that is how long I want to stay your friend."
I had heard this song before, but this time it really started me thinking. So far, I have made so many new friends at Saint Andrew from the time I arrived just a week ago. It's hard to believe I have known them for only a because I feel a strong relationship with many of them already. I feel so fortunate for these new friendships and am very grateful for the enormous amount of hospitality I have received.

On the other hand, this children's church experience made me reflect on one of my gold friends, my role model named Grady. Grady was an older man who I knew from my home church First Christian Church of McKinney and who passed away about a year ago. Grady was one of the kindest and most caring people I have ever known. Making people feel welcome and included was what he did best every Sunday morning. He served as a "door man" and greeter for the church, but did much more than handing out bulletins and counting the attendance in worship. He made you laugh by telling jokes, remembered special things about you, and would make small talk about his love for high school sports. Grady is a friend I do not ever want to forget.

I have felt very welcomed and included here at Saint Andrew because of the new friendships I have formed that are like the friendship I had between myself and Grady. So now, more than ever I am going to try to make new friends but keep the old.

Rebekah Cypert is in her third year as a HELM Leadership Fellow and is a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in McKinney, Texas.
