An early start on social work

It is another school year, and another chapter being written in our lives. My return to Bethany College this semester has been bittersweet, as I say goodbye to a summer full of fun and learning, and say hello, once again, to friends I haven't seen for three months. Once again I am finding my daily routine for the semester, and hoping that the routine doesn't become too boring. But most importantly, I am finally learning what I need to do to succeed in the "real world".

The past two years, my classes were mainly core requirements and courses setting up a foundation for my major classes. But finally, I have reached the courses that will give me the skills and knowledge base for being a successful social worker. Don't get me wrong, these courses are going to be extremely challenging as I have a specified number of placement hours a semester I will have to complete as well as group projects, papers, and professional development activities. However, it is exciting to know that the hard work will only benefit me in the future. But my education isn't the only thing preparing me for the real world.

It is another year for me to develop my faith and discern what my call to ministry entails. This year, I have a strong commitment to service. As president of Alpha Phi Omega, the co-ed service fraternity on Bethany's campus, I am receiving many opportunities to participate and organize service projects for my campus, community, and the nation. Already this semester I have helped raise $500 for hurricane victims, helped at the Friday night recovery program in Wheeling, and will be painting a playground in Wheeling next weekend. My covenant this year will also focus on service, as I will be bringing students, faculty, and the community together in knitting circles to create scarves, hats, and prayer shawls to donate to local schools and nursing homes. I am hoping this will give those involved a fun outlet to the stresses of school and daily lives. Knitting is a very relaxing hobby, and it will be fun to get together with people and fellowship while knitting scarves and shawls for those who need them.

Though my junior year is sure to be filled with a lot of work and stresses, I am looking forward to every second of it. I am ready for a challenging year in both my education and my faith, and I know that with the support of my friends and guidance from God, this year will be one of the best!
