Retreat!

Allison Enari "Why did you want to come to Oxy?" is probably one of the most complicated and slightly annoying questions people have asked me since deciding to attend in May.

For those who don't know (and most people don't) Occidental College is a small liberal arts school in a Los Angeles suburb close to Pasadena. Here's why:

  1. Having just 1,800 students allows me to have all the professor help I ask for.

  2. It's warm, and after spending 12 long winters in Indiana, a mild 70 degree average year-round is a far cry from the minus 5 degree winters and 95 degree (with ridiculous humidity) summers that I've endured.

  3. It's not Indiana. It's not that I don't love Indiana, but a change of pace can do a person good. People need a break.

Faith is no different. Why else do we go on retreats, have conferences, attend church camps? To take a break from the norm, really evaluate our lives, and strengthen our faith by seeing how Christ can work through us.

College is yet to be "normal" for me, so I'm reveling in all the amazing "newness" of everything, like being considered a "grown-up." I'm not unique because I'm half Samoan (although that is still pretty cool), but because I'm from Indiana. I'm not the preacher's kid anymore, although it still comes up occasionally. I'm not the choir geek that I was in high school (okay maybe I still am — but choir is cool!).

With all the newness, I've realized that I can't do it alone. With the strong support system of my friends and church family both here at Pasadena Christian Church and back home, I'm sure I'll turn out fine. I just have to remember to "Walk with God" as I sang my last Sunday at my home church. These next four years will be different for me as I continue to grow intellectually, spiritually, and hopefully not physically, but through it all God will always be there.

Allison is in her first year as a HELM Leadership Fellow and is a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Bloomington, Indiana.
