Round Two: Famous Alumni

2. Helen Stephens won the gold medals in the 100 meter and 4x100 meter relay at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. Which Disciples school did she attend?

3. Stephen Austin, the "Father of Texas," spent two years at a Disciples undergraduate institution. Which one was it? Stephen Austin spent two years at Transylvania University.

4. Bill White was a first baseman for the New York Giants, St. Louis Cardinals, and Philadelphia Phillies, and a sportscaster for the New York Yankees. When he became President of the National League in 1989, he was the highest-ranking African American executive in professional sports. Which Disciples college did he attend? Bill White, who was a six-time All-Star and won seven Golden Gloves, attended Hiram College.

Round Three: Disciples by the Numbers

5. Garfield Circle, at the intersection of Maryland Avenue and First Street, in southwest Washington, DC, has a memorial to former Hiram College (and, yes, United States) President James Garfield. Round Four: Campbellmania

1. Alexander Campbell gave his tenth child an appropriate name. What was it? Alexander Campbell's tenth child, a daughter, was named Decima. (Decima… decimal… ten… get it?)

2. Truth or false? According to The Campbell-Stone Encyclopedia, Alexander Campbell was known to wear jeans in the pulpit. Alexander Campbell preaching in jeans? It's true.

3. In 1847 Alexander Campbell made his only trip outside North America. In Scotland, he spent ten days somewhere he had not intended to visit. Where was that? During his visit to Scotland, Campbell spent ten days in Bridewill Prison in Glasgow as the result of a dispute with anti-slavery partisans.

4. This Nashville preacher with a very familiar name was the first African American to withdraw from a congregation over instrumental music and other innovations. Many African American Churches of Christ in middle Tennessee had their origins in the ministry of Alexander Cleveland Campbell.

5. In 1836, Campbell reported that in just one trip he was away from home for 94 days and delivered 93 discourses. Within 10 minutes, what did he report to be the average length of those discourses? Campbell said the average length of his discourses in 1836 was 80 minutes.
