Projects focusing on leadership development, peace and justice issues, and relations between the church and higher education will be underwritten by grants awarded by the HELM Board of Directors.

College/University Grants fund special projects at undergraduate institutions related to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) that will benefit the relationship between the institution and the church as a whole. The colleges and universities put a portion of the money they are allocated from the Disciples Mission Fund into a special fund to support these grants. New grants are made each year by the HELM Board of Directors following applications from the schools.

Eureka College: Friends & Family: What does it mean to be church-related?
At a time when the meaning of covenant is under examination in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Eureka College plans to assemble representatives of the different expressions of the church to examine the meaning of being church-related. General ministries, higher education, regions, and congregations would be represented at the conference, which would be held near Eureka’s central Illinois campus.
Lynchburg College: Leadership Class Exploration
Following two previous College-University Grants that focused on leadership education, Lynchburg College’s proposal would explore the creation of an elective leadership course that could become part of the college’s general educational requirements. The grant would underwrite the process needed to create a new course offering.
Transylvania University: African-American Disciples Leadership Symposium
Transylvania University will host a two-day conference of African Americans ages 16-20 at the Transylvania campus for an examination of church leadership. Modeled on the university’s successful Transy & TEAM vocational workshop, this workshop would expose participants to several leaders in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and encourage these emerging leaders to consider how they can lead in the church, whether lay or ordained.
William Woods University: Just and Peaceful Society/Civitas Forum Programming
William Woods University created two related programs: the Just and Peaceful Society lecture series would bring a variety of speakers to campus to discuss politics, racial reconciliation, global human rights, the ethics of power, and a call to action for youth. The Civitas Forum aims to bring speakers with opposing viewpoints on contemporary political issues with an emphasis on civil discourse and the integration of faith and vocation.
Grants are made only for projects that represent new initiatives beyond present programming. Including this year’s proposals, the program has funded 89 projects. Each undergraduate institution currently in covenant with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has received at least one grant during the program’s history. A complete historical list of College-University Grant recipients is available at www.helmdisciples.org/helm/grants.htm.
