Q: What will be the most memorable dinner event at the Portland General Assembly?

A: HELM's Great Disciples Leadership Quiz.

If you're heading to the General Assembly in Portland, Oregon, this summer, be sure to attend HELM's event on Monday, July 25th. You don't need to pull an all-nighter to get ready for our event, but taking a refresher course on Disciples history might help. In the great St. Louis tradition of "trivia night" fund-raisers for local charities, HELM is planning its own event with a test on Disciples leaders of the past as well as an opportunity to meet Disciples leaders of the here and now. If you win, you'll get prizes. If you lose, you'll get "HELM: The Home Game." (Well, not really, but you'll probably learn something, and that's always valuable.) Tickets will be only $20 and will go on sale this spring.

HELM, 6 Disciples colleges team up to promote Leadership Fellows Program to new students

As a cooperative effort between HELM and six Disciples colleges and universities, nearly 300 high-school seniors have received letters from HELM in the past few weeks informing them of the HELM Leadership Fellows Program.

The Leadership Fellows Program identifies Disciples undergraduates with leadership potential for the church and the world. Where better to find a list of Disciples students than Disciples colleges and universities? Since then, letters have been mailed to 32 states letting students know of the opportunity to apply.

A seventh college agreed to include information about the Leadership Fellows Program in a general financial aid mailing.

Disciples students with leadership potential are eligible for the Leadership Fellows Program if (a) they are high-school seniors or students at a community college (b) who will enter a four-year college or university, private or public, beginning this fall. All materials must be postmarked by March 15, 2005. For more information, visit helmdisciples.org.

Three congregations to welcome summer interns

Three Disciples congregations will host HELM Leadership Fellows during summer internships this year.

For the third year, St. Andrew Christian Church in Olathe, Kan., will open its doors. For the first time, though, they will host a pair of Leadership Fellows: Michelle Harvick, a junior at Texas Christian University, and Rebekah Cypert, a sophomore at Bethany College, who will shadow senior pastor Holly McKissick.

National City Christian Church in Washington, D.C., will welcome Krista Johnson, who will help the congregation's child-care program.

Union Avenue Christian Church in St. Louis, Mo., debuts a new internship. Kelly Rand will be working with senior minister Suzanne Webb and UACC's parish nurse.

If your congregation would like to host a summer intern in the future, please contact Brad Lyons at the HELM office.
