Leadership Fellows Tell Their Stories

This summer five Leadership Fellows offered a glimpse into their summer activities: Three students interned with congregations, another at the HELM office, and a fifth attended the Fund for Theological Education Undergraduate Fellows Conference in Pasadena, Calif.

tellyourstory.gif 180x121Here are some excerpts from their accounts. To read the entire essay, go online to www.helmdisciples.org/helm/news.htm and look for "What I'm Doing This Summer."

Michelle Harvick (FTE Conference): "...The air was buzzing with theological discussion. People were sharing their views on all sorts of issues and in all sorts of places — in the street, in the sanctuary, in the classroom, and in the lecture hall. These discussions were not about who was right and who was wrong, but more about gaining an understanding of one another's perspectives."

Alison Williams, St. Andrew Christian Church (Olathe, Kan.): "Growing up as a minister's kid, I have always had some insight on the inner workings of the church, such as where the left over Easter candy was stashed. Now that I'm entering my adulthood working through HELM and St. Andrew, I've been given the opportunity to assist in the inner workings of the church."

Laura Jennison, National City Christian Church, Washington, D.C.: "In a group of thirty children of widely varying ages and backgrounds, I expected to deal with cliques and to mediate between kids who could not work together. However, from the very first day, I could see God at work as everyone in our program came together in community. There were no exclusive groupings and there were no arguments that lasted more than a day. I had never before seen such true community in a group of children or adults."

Natalie Dixon, Marana (Ariz.) Christian Church: "In comparison to the numerous 'mission' trips I have been on before, this one beats them all. Spending time with the people is how relationships are formed, it is how love is expressed, it is how lives are changed.... During your next trip, please take a day or two and spend time with those you have come to serve. Trust me, it will make all the difference."

Casey Abney, HELM office: "Life is full of surprises and there are many lessons to be learned from new experiences. Placed in this new situation, I think about what my mentor Gilbert Marez once said to me: I am sure God has brought you here for a reason. What it is, I don't know, but hopefully we will find the best use for the gifts and talents you bring with you."

HELM News

General Assembly already? It's time to start thinking about the next denominational get-together, scheduled for July 23-27, 2005, in Portland, Oregon. HELM's Celebration of Leadership will be Monday, July 25. Tickets will be available early next year.

The HELM Board of Directors will meet viaconference call on November 10. In April 2005, the board will gather in St. Louis for a three-day meeting.

Charlie, Frances, Ivan, and other hurricanes that have threatened Florida won't keep us from holding the fourth annual Leadership Fellows Conference at the Dayspring Episcopal Retreat Center near Tampa Bay November 12-14. All 26 Leadership Fellows will be joined by 25 Phillips University Legacy Scholars for this year's event. Guests Kay Bessler-Northcutt of Phillips Theological Seminary and Stephanie Paulsell of the Harvard Divinity School will lead. The theme of this year's conference is "Body, Mind, Soul, and Strength: Becoming Wholly God's."

Come fly with me! Did you know you can donate your air miles to HELM? Transportation for the HELM Leadership Conference costs thousands of dollars each year. Any donation that can eliminate the need to purchase a ticket is as good as cash. For more details, contact us at helm@helmdisciples.org or by phone at 314-991-3000.

What are you doing for New Year? Disciples in college will be gathering in Houston with UCC and Presbyterian students for Joshua Generation, a new event organized in part by the Student Ecumenical Partnership. The gathering is set for December 29-January 2. For more information, visit http://www.stepnetwork.org/joshua.html.
