Hiram College

Hiram-Bricker-Delaney.jpg 162x648 Jason Bricker came to Hiram College out of an independent church, founded by his grandfather, and discovered the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) as a student. He was particularly active in service work, joining student-led mission trips, and eventually becoming the leader and organizer himself. He expanded the mission trips from a spring break program to one that utilizes virtually all school breaks.

Chad Delaney is from a Disciples of Christ congregation and came to Hiram College pursuing the ministry. He reorganized and renamed the campus Christian organization and was its leader during his four years on campus. He received the Higher Education and Leadership Ministries Leadership Fellows scholarship and became the first formal intern at Hiram Christian Church.

Teachers like Linda Rea helped Chad and Jason recognize their calls to service focused on justice. Her "Marginalized Voices of Central America" class travels to Guatemala and Mexico where students meet and talk with those who are marginalized in our world and learn what questions they ask and what words they have for us. Hiram students meet with families of missing persons and community health workers, participate in a Mayan religious ceremony, and spend time learning about issues of the country and people by interacting with Guatemalan government officials. The program offers students the opportunity to examine the root causes and history of conditions of injustice, to study the role of United States foreign policy, and to reflect on the role and responsibility of people of moral conviction in working for social and political change.

These transformative experiences are one part of what Hiram offers its students. Jason and Chad now attend Vanderbilt University Divinity School, and both understand at least part of their call to be working for justice.
