The DHE Leadership Fellows Program isn’t just about money. The program stresses the value of learning leadership from a mentor. One of the ways we provide that opportunity is by arranging summer internships that help students learn first-hand about ways to lead in a new situation.

This summer, four DHE Leadership Fellows will have internships:

  • Casey Abney (TCU ‘04) will join the DHE staff in St. Louis for the summer, and

  • Laura Jennison (Mount Holyoke College ‘05) will work with a youth program at National City Christian Church in Washington, D.C.

  • Jessica Sandwell (U. of Missouri ‘07) will be working at Broadway Christian Church in Columbia, Mo.

  • Alison Williams (Indiana U. ‘05) heads to St. Andrew Christian Church near Kansas City. This will be the second consecutive summer St. Andrew has hosted a DHE Leadership Fellow.
In addition, another Leadership Fellow has arranged her own congregational internship. Natalie Dixon (Eureka College ‘05) will be at Community Christian Church in Marana, Az. Last summer, Natalie became the first DHE Leadership Fellow to serve an intership when she worked at St. Andrew in Olathe.

DHE Update

  • Three DHE Leadership Fellows will graduate this spring: Casey Abney (TCU), Steve Mason (Drake University), and Shannon Smith (American University in Rome). We wish them the best of luck as they begin their careers. While they are personally irreplaceable, their slots in the DHELF Program will be filled with incoming freshman. Look for an announcement in late April or early May.

  • In a first-of-its-kind partnership with Disciples colleges and universities, more than 300 Disciples students were mailed information about the DHE Leadership Fellows Program and other undergraduate programs.

  • DHE Leadership Fellows Natalie Dixon and Alison Williams joined a pair of Phillips University Legacy Scholars in St. Louis to assist DHE staff in planning the 2004 Leadership Conference, scheduled for November in Ellenton, Fla. Scheduled to speak are Kay Bessler-Northcutt of Phillips Theological Seminary and Stephanie Paulsell of Harvard Divinity School.

  • The STEP (Student Ecumenical Partnership) Leadership Team met in St. Petersburg, Fla., to plan Joshua Generation, an ecumenical student gathering in Houston during the New Year holiday.

  • DHE staff joined in the effort to thank congregations that support the Disciples Mission Fund and the Easter Special Day Offering, which benefits general ministries like DHE.

  • The DHE Board of Directors will consider a name change at their April 30-May 2 meeting.

  • DHE is co-sponsoring “Untangle the Web,” a workshop to help congregations build better web sites, to be held in Indianapolis in March.

  • Two DHE-related councils will meet this spring in St. Louis. The Council on Theological Education will meet May 27-28, and the Council on Ministries in Higher Education will meet June 11-12. A third, the Council of Colleges and Universities, will meet June 17 in Cleveland, Ohio, in conjunction with this year’s Transylvania University Lilly Project Symposium.
