Five Disciple Seminarians Awarded With
Brown, Dickerson Scholarships

The Division of Higher Education has recognized five graduate theological students for their leadership, scholastic, and ministerial abilities with scholarships for the 2003-2004 academic year.

Candidates for the Dewitt and Othel Brown Ministerial Scholarships are nominated by their institutions for outstanding leadership and ministerial potential. This year's recipients are:

  • Lee P. Hull. A student at the Disciples Divinity House of the University of Chicago, Hull is a member of West Street Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Tipton, Ind., and currently serves as a student minister at United Christian Church. She is a former Disciples Peace Fellowship summer intern and recipient of the Fund for Theological Education Ministry Fellowship. She earned her bachelor's degree from Albion College.

  • Nathan C. Brown. A student at the Disciples Divinity House at Vanderbilt University Divinity School, Brown is a member of University Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Fort Worth, Texas. He is a graduate of Texas Christian University and serves as vice president of the Divinity School's student government association.
Hull and Brown will receive $2,000 to be used for ongoing education.

The Ann E. Dickerson Scholarships are for female members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) working toward the Ph.D. degree in religion studies. All three of this year's recipients are students at the Disciples Divinity House of the University of Chicago:

  • Amy C. Artman. The co-pastor of Catching Life Christian Church with her husband, she is earning her Ph.D. in the History of Christianity and plans to graduate in 2007. She has led classes on Disciples history and thought for the Divinity House and the Illinois/Wisconsin Region. Artman, 32, studied at Southwest Missouri State University and Brite Divinity School.

  • Patricia "Tish" Duncan. A member of Rock Bridge Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Columbia, Mo., she is focusing on Biblical Students, specifically the New Testament, and plans to graduate in 2008. Duncan, 28, has earned degrees from the University of Missouri and the University of Chicago.

  • Kristin D. Van Heyningen. A member of Fox Valley Area Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Aurora, Ill., she is studying Religious Ethics and plans to graduate in 2004. Van Heyningen, 34, has earned degrees from Texas Christian University and the University of Chicago.

Each Dickerson Scholarship recipient will receive $2,000 for her ongoing education.

DHE nurtures transforming leadership for the church, working in partnership with Disciples higher education institutions, campus ministries, congregations, regions, and the other general ministries. Including cooperative efforts with local congregations, DHE helped distribute more than $250,000 in scholarships in 2003. Recognizing students who demonstrate leadership potential, DHE operates the Leadership Fellows Program for undergraduate students and works with the Phillips University Legacy Foundation to award additional annual scholarships to students attending Disciples colleges and universities.
