Bethany is a National Liberal Arts I College. It is the oldest degree-granting institution in West Virginia, founded in 1840 by Alexander Campbell; an innovative nineteenth-century educator, author, agriculturist and religious leader. Mr. Campbell was a principal founder of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and Bethany remains proudly committed to its heritage and covenant relationship with the Church.

Bethany's student body represents a broad spectrum of economic, social and religious backgrounds. Students come from thirty-five states and twenty-six countries. Campus activities include NCAA men's and women's athletics, choir, band, theatre and 38 recognized student clubs. Opportunities for religious life activities include the Disciples Student Fellowship & Friends, Christian Cafe, and the Coalition for Christian Outreach.

The academic program provides an outstanding undergraduate preparation with a strong liberal arts foundation. Bachelors degrees are provided in 26 areas with pre-professional programs available in engineering, law, medicine, ministry and veterinary medicine. Exceptional opportunities are available for students to study off-campus.

Bethany sponsors a generous merit scholarship and financial aid program. Students who are members of the Christ-ian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the United Church of Christ are eligible for a series of church-related awards which include: Disciples Student Grant (awarded to any student who is a member of a D.O.C. or U.C.C. congregation); the Child of Disciples/U.C.C. Minister; the Campbell Heritage Awards (presented to students who have provided leadership to General or Regional Youth councils); and the Timothy Fund Grants (presented to pre-ministerial students).
